Midsommar Watercoloring Class

Midsommar Watercoloring Class

Saturday 22 June
N Friant Rd - 10am - 2 Hours
Kimberly Fain
The summer solstice occurs when one of Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. It has been universal among humans to treasure this time of warmth and light. Midsommar is a holiday that celebrates the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and the transition from winter to summer. It's celebrated in many countries, but is especially associated with Scandinavia, where it's a national holiday in Finland and Sweden.

Join us for a beautiful art day and take time to explore the beauty, warmth, and merrymaking of Midsommar. Learn the basics of watercolor washes and color blending in this intimate, hands-on workshop. You will be walked through the step-by-step process of how to create a remarkable watercolor painting. We will be painting at the park outside on a day that's meant for us to appreciate all the gifts that nature gives us.

I was the only one there. I am a little more advanced than the class offered. But the instructor did fine considering.

I have always been fascinated by the beauty and iridescence of peacock feathers. I painted this small, 5x7, piece as a bit of practice and appreciation.

Title or Location: The photo which is referenced in this watercolor was taken at Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park by Kavan Chay which made the cut for the 2024 Milky Way Photographer of the Year international competition.
I have always loved watching the milky way, its the brightest out at sea. I have never been able to capture it with a camera. I had this idea in my head about painting a red house on a lonely hill with the milky way above it showing how small we are compared to the universe. Then I came across this shot taken out at Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park by Kavan Chay and it was like the universe had heard me and given me a reference photo. the watercolor looks nothing like the original photo but I love

This was painted from a tutorial by Sarah Cray on Let?s Make Art?s YouTube site. The paper is a sketchbook made with cotton salvage which is quite a challenge to paint on.
